To honor the leadership, inspiration, wisdom of my father, we established the Jerome J. Segal Endowed Graduate Scholarship Fund and the Jerome J. Segal Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship Fund at Carnegie Mellon University in 2006.
The scholarships were a small way to thank my father for his wisdom - and for teaching me the importance of a strong moral and ethical footing as the foundational elements in growing a business. He always told me to act like a mensch, a true gentleman in all my actions. It was his guidance, influence, and steadiness that led Dormont through its formative years and his invention of the stainless steel gas connector that enables the company to realize its tremendous growth and success.
My father always spoke about the importance of education and we wanted to recognize and reward four CMU/Tepper students every year. The scholarship funds are awarded each year to one male and one female student in their second year of the graduate business program, and to one male and one female student who has completed at least the first year of the undergraduate business program.
The awards are given by the Dean and Faculty - and are focused on "Leadership" at the Tepper School of Business. Preference is given to students who demonstrate superior academic performance and scholarship, exhibit innovative and creative thought, demonstrate leadership in either the classroom or extracurricular school activities, and show the ability to serve as inspiration to professors and peers alike.
I have spoken to a number of the winners and they have been deeply touched, motivated and inspired by the Jerome J. Segal Scholarship. It has heleped them financially and served as a springboard as they continue to demonstrate inspiration leadership in their careers.
